Antique Italian Lava Cameo and 14 Kt Gold Pendant

Victorian era- c. 1880s

high relief bust of a Renaissance woman carved into russet stone and framed in a 14 karat gold setting. sold with a modern 18kt gold plated chain.

unmarked, setting tests for 14 karat gold with digital tester.

note: Lava cameos became a popular souvenir item during the Victorian era for affluent Northern Europeans traveling to Italy as part of the "grand tour". They are originally carved from rock recovered from the area around the Pompeii eruption.
