antique c. 1900
A perennial favorite at Fieldwork: the crescent moon and star motif elegantly etched and set with glimmering paste glass stones. The reverse inscription holds a bit of a mystery: it reads "O.B.Y. to" and the original initials of the recipient appear to have been decoratively "scribbled" out with an engraving tool, and the name "A. Spellings" is inscribed below. Was the locket a re-gift? Was there an inscription error? A change of heart? We can't know for sure, but its fun to guess. The goldfill locket retains one interior bezel frame but no frame covers. Offered on a modern 20" 14kt goldfill rolo chain.
hallmarked with "W&H Co" within a heart, for Wightman & Hough Co. of Providence, RI, c. 1856-1922
locket is 1 1/8" dia.
very good condition. Stones show some wear and patina, a few have minor losses. locket closes firmly and stays closed but does not "snap".
