Martin Van Schaak began his career in the 1940s, and soon rose to prominence in the highend evening bag scene. Van Schaak did not advertise, and most of his pieces were custom-made for his high-profile clientele (which included Jackie Kennedy among others). In the 1960s, his made-to-order handbags cost upward of $125.. Van Schaak believed that black, beige, navy and brown were best for daytime wear. For cocktails, ruby-red (like this listing) and emerald-green were his preference
Today, Martin Van Schaak’s vintage handbags are considered rare collector's items.
